Czech President condemns removal of Ukrainian flag from parliament building

Czech President Petr Pavel has criticized the actions of the new Speaker of Parliament Tomio Okamura, who last week ordered the removal of the Ukrainian flag from the administrative building. The head of state stressed that the Ukrainian flag should remain on the parliament building until the end of the war, reports the ČTK news agency.

“The flags were hung as a symbol of solidarity with the country that was attacked by an aggressive state. I think that nothing has changed on this issue yet. Ukraine is still the object of Russian aggression, and until a certain peace agreement is reached, our solidarity with it must not weaken, the Czech President said.

Petr Pavel stressed the importance of continuing to provide material assistance to Ukraine. According to him, any reduction or cessation of support would cause even greater harm to Kyiv.

“Material, financial, military or any other that would have a direct impact on the loss of life, injuries and material damage. I am convinced that our assistance should continue, because it is not only solidarity with Ukraine, but also an expression of the values that we, as a democratic country, must stand for," emphasized Petr Pavel.

As a reminder, on November 6, the newly elected Speaker of the Czech Parliament Tomio Okamura ordered the removal of the Ukrainian flag, which had been flying over the building since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He posted a video on social media in which he holds a ladder for the man who is removing the flag, and called it "a certain symbol". On the same day, deputies from three political parties condemned Okamura’s act and hung Ukrainian flags from the windows of the parliament building.
