Denmark summoned the U.S. ambassador over information about espionage in Greenland.
Denmark’s foreign minister has summoned the acting US ambassador to discuss information that US intelligence agencies have been instructed to focus their attention on Greenland. About this informs BBC.
“We will be calling the Acting US Ambassador to discuss at the State Department to see if we can confirm this information.” – said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lars Lekke Rasmussen.
He expressed concern about the information that appeared in the American press, stressing: “we do not spy on friends.”
“I can’t know if it’s true because it’s in the paper. But it seems those who are speaking out don’t vehemently deny it. It worries me.” Rasmussen added.
We will remind that on May 6, The Wall Street Journal reported that American intelligence agencies were instructed to pay special attention to the movement for independence in Greenland, as well as to the strategic interests of the United States in the field of mineral extraction on the island.
The article mentioned the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency. According to the WSJ, citing two anonymous officials, the intelligence services have been advised to study the situation surrounding Greenland’s desire for independence and the reaction to US resource extraction initiatives.
Director of US National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, accused the publication of trying to “undermine” President Donald Trump’s position through politicization and leaking classified information. She did not deny the very fact of the report, but stated that the newspaper committed “a violation of the law and undermined the security and democracy of our country.” In turn, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service refrained from commenting on the publication, but noted that it “naturally” takes into account the US interest in Greenland.
