Diplomats from three countries sang “Shchedryk” for Ukrainians in the Kyiv metro
The embassies of Great Britain, Germany and France have prepared a joint Christmas greetings for Ukrainians, performing “Shchedryk”. Diplomats, as well as Ukrainian professional musicians from the Open Opera Ukraine project and the National House of Music, joined the initiative. The video was filmed at the “Zoloti Vorota” metro station in Kyiv and published on the social networks of diplomatic missions.
The German Embassy emphasized the symbolism of this composition and its significance for Ukraine and the world, emphasizing the joint support for the Ukrainian people.
“Our voices – the embassies of Germany, France and Great Britain and Ukrainian artists – merge in “Shchedryk” as a sign of support and solidarity with Ukrainians. For over a century, the legendary “Shchedryk” by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych has sounded in the world as a symbol of Christmas. Back in 1919, the overflowing polyphony conquered the hearts of Europe, and later America, revealing to the world Ukraine – an independent nation with its own voice. And it conquers to this day, “the diplomats noted.
The topic of Ukraine during the Christmas period was also mentioned by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in his holiday address. At the same time, Pope Francis said that he felt “great sadness” over Russia’s refusal to agree to a Christmas truce in the war against Ukraine.
