87,000 people were evacuated due to the eruption of a volcano in the central part of the Philippines. About this informs AP.
Kanlaon volcano began erupting earlier this week, with activity lasting about four minutes. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, this caused a red-hot flow of gas, ash, debris and rock capable of destroying everything in its path.
A large area, including the province of Antique, located more than 200 kilometers from the volcano, was covered with a layer of volcanic ash. The authorities have defined a danger zone in a radius of 6 kilometers around the volcano. In the town of La Castellana, located near the mountainous areas, about 47,000 people were at risk at the time of the eruption.
Panaad Stadium in the nearby city of Bacolod was designated as the main evacuation center, capable of accommodating up to 30,000 people. In addition, temporary shelters for evacuees were created in 11 villages. Flights in the affected region have been canceled, and towns located near the western and southern slopes of Kanlaon have been urgently evacuated.
Authorities closed schools and imposed a nighttime curfew in the most vulnerable areas to ensure public safety.
