The head of the Pentagon called hundreds of generals to an emergency meeting without explaining the reasons
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of generals and admirals of the US Armed Forces to urgently assemble at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week, without explaining why. This is reported by The Washington Post.
More than a dozen people familiar with the matter said such a directive is highly unusual and has been sent to virtually every top military commander around the world. The document was issued earlier this week after Hagseth’s team at the Pentagon announced plans for a major reorganization of the military’s high command.
In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed that Hegseth would “appear before senior military leadership early next week,” but did not provide further details.
Hegseth’s order applies to all senior officers at the rank of brigadier general or above, or their equivalent in the Navy, who hold command positions, as well as their senior enlisted advisers. The meeting is expected to be attended by commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed in Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.
There are about 800 American generals and admirals in the United States and dozens of other countries. Neither of them could recall the Secretary of Defense ever ordering the gathering of so many generals and admirals. Some have pointed out that this has raised security concerns. Many commanders stationed abroad will be forced to attend the meeting, and some have questioned the feasibility of such a move.
