The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) declared a categorical refusal to finance Ukrainian companies owned or controlled by oligarchs, including the energy holding DTEK. This is said in messages Corriere della Sera.
The president of the bank, Odile Renaud-Basso, emphasized that the EBRD aims to help liberate the Ukrainian economy from the influence of oligarchs. She noted that in order to receive financial support, Rinat Akhmetov, the owner of DTEK, must cede control over the company.
“We stand firm on this, because it is one of the key reforms for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. If we compromise on this issue, we will harm the country’s long-term prospects.”, – stated in the statement.
DTEK General Director Maksym Timchenko responded to this statement, who emphasized that in the face of constant Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure, the company is seeking help from all available financial institutions.
According to the company, Russia damaged or destroyed up to 90% of DTEK’s energy capacity in the spring and summer of 2024. The occupiers also caused further destruction during a massive attack on November 17, causing emergency power outages in Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts.
