The amount of direct damage suffered by Ukraine’s infrastructure due to a full-scale Russian invasion reached $170 billion as of November 2024. About this informs KSE Institute in its report.
The housing sector remains the most affected – $60 billion in losses. As a result of hostilities, 236,000 residential buildings were destroyed or damaged, in particular:
- 209 thousand private houses
- 27 thousand apartment buildings
- 600 hostels.
Transport infrastructure suffered significant losses – $38.5 billion. More than 26,000 km of highways were destroyed, which cost $28.3 billion. Other transport sectors also suffered serious damage:
- Railways – $4.3 billion
- Port infrastructure – $0.85 billion
- Aviation industry – $2 billion
- Private motor vehicles – 260,000 destroyed or damaged cars (damages – $2.2 billion).
Total energy losses are estimated at $14.6 billion. Russian troops completely destroyed the Kakhovka and Dniprovska HPPs, Trypilska and Zmiivska TPPs. Other power plants, high-voltage substations, and oil and gas infrastructure facilities were significantly affected.
Ukrainian agriculture lost $10.3 billion. As a result of hostilities, the following was destroyed:
- 130 thousand units of agricultural machinery
- 4 million tons of granaries
- 16 thousand hectares of perennial crops
- 298 thousand hectares of forest, which caused an additional $4.5 billion in damages.
In addition, the educational infrastructure suffered losses in the amount of $7.3 billion – more than 4,000 educational institutions were damaged or destroyed. Medicine lost $4.3 billion – 1,554 medical facilities were damaged. Cultural, sports, and tourist facilities were damaged to the tune of $4 billion – 3,921 cultural facilities, 399 religious buildings, and 343 sports complexes were destroyed.
The total losses of the telecommunications sector amounted to $1.2 billion. In the de-occupied areas, the destruction of communication networks in some places reached 100%.
Damages continue to mount, and the full cost of the war may be even higher.
