Elderly Japanese voluntarily go to jail: CNN

Elderly residents of Japan voluntarily seek to be in prison in order to provide themselves with basic living conditions. About this informs CNN.

The nation’s largest women’s prison is mostly filled with elderly people, who staff say often prefer incarceration because of the loneliness and lack of stability in life outside.

“There are even people who say they are ready to pay 20,000. or 30 thousand (5404-8106 hryvnias) per month to live here permanently.” said Takayesi Shiranaga, an employee of the prison in Totiga.

Prisoners in such institutions receive regular meals, free medical care, care and communication, which are often unavailable to them outside the prison.

“There are very good people in this prison. Perhaps this life is the most stable for me.” – said the 81-year-old prisoner, who is serving a sentence for stealing food.

Some come here because they are cold or hungry. In prison, they have access to free medical care, but after release, these services become unavailable to them, which makes many want to stay here as long as possible.
