EU proposes using satellite monitoring to monitor ceasefire in Ukraine
The European Union proposes to use satellite monitoring to monitor the ceasefire in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, after the meeting of the EU Security Council on May 12.
The EU considers such monitoring as one of the security guarantees for Ukraine after a possible peace agreement with the Russian Federation.
“We are advancing our work on EU security guarantees for Ukraine when there is a ceasefire. This includes strengthening the EU Satellite Centre so that it can also provide support for monitoring the ceasefire,” Kallas stressed.
She also added that European satellites could “track Russia’s shadow fleet and help prevent the circumvention of sanctions.”
According to the EU’s top diplomat, ministers also discussed the modernization of two training centers for the Ukrainian military. Kallas thanked member states that have already provided funding for this.
