Georgian authorities recognise Ukrainian refugee organisation as ‘foreign agent’

In Georgia, a list of organizations recognized as “foreign agents” began to be formed after the relevant law came into force a few months ago. One of the Ukrainian organizations was also included in this list.
As informs “Echo of the Caucasus” (Radio Liberty project), nine non-governmental organizations were the first to be included in the list. Among them are such as “Professional Union of Farmers and Agricultural Workers of Georgia”, “Kutai Youth House”, “Christian Union”, “Jewish Cultural and Educational Fund”, “Inclusive practices” (which supports people with disabilities) and “Molodizhna the organization of Ukrainians of Georgia – Svitanok”.
The Ukrainian organization “Svitanok” stated that their activities are focused on helping Ukrainian refugees to integrate into Georgian society, as well as on the development of civil society. In light of the inclusion in the list of “foreign agents”, the organization opposed the restriction of the public sector, calling the law on “foreign agents” an obstacle to Georgia’s European integration.
Despite this, the organization decided to register as a “foreign agent”, arguing that it is impossible to risk providing assistance to Ukrainians abroad and the safety of its employees while on the territory of Georgia.
The names of all organizations included in the list of “foreign agents”, as well as their financial reports, have already been published on the official website of the Public Register of Georgia.
