EU summit backs Europe’s rearmament plan

At the summit held on March 6 in Brussels, the countries of the European Union supported the initiatives of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, regarding the rearmament of Europe. About this reported on the website of the Council of the EU.

The document states that, given previous decisions, mandates and appeals by von der Leyen, Europe recognizes the need for significant increases in security and defense spending.

“Takes into account the commission’s intention to put forward a proposal for a new EU instrument to provide its member states with loans secured by the EU budget in the amount of up to €150 billion, and suggests that the council urgently consider this proposal.” – says the message.

This initiative is part of von der Leyen’s plan called ReArm Europe. The press release also emphasizes the importance of attracting private investment to finance the defense industry, particularly through cooperation with the investment banking sector.

The development of air and anti-missile defense, artillery systems, the production of missiles and ammunition, as well as the improvement of unmanned technologies and measures to counter them are highlighted among the key directions. Particular attention is paid to the protection of critical infrastructure.

European Council President Antonio Costa said that, based on the von der Leyen plan, the summit had adopted “concrete decisions” on expanding resources and mechanisms to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities. In his opinion, this will contribute to investments in the economy and increase the level of security of citizens.

“Our decisions today send a clear signal: we are backing up our words with deeds. We are delivering on what we promised. To strengthen our deterrence. To strengthen the security of our citizens. And in the process – to increase the competitiveness of Europe, as well as our technological and industrial base.”, Koshta noted.
