Every two weeks, one language disappears on Earth: UN

United Nations Press Office reported, that every two weeks humanity loses one language, and with it – a unique part of cultural and intellectual heritage. This statement was dedicated to International Mother Language Day.

“Every two weeks, humanity loses one language, and with it a unique part of its cultural and intellectual heritage. According to UNESCO, of the 8,324 languages ​​that exist today, approximately 7,000 are actively used.” – said in the statement.

The UN emphasizes that “only a few hundred languages” play a “significant role” in education systems and public administration, and “no more than 100 languages” are used in the field of digital technologies.

The release also emphasizes that awareness of the importance of linguistic diversity has been growing in the world in recent decades:

“Languages ​​are of the utmost importance for development, at the same time not only ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also contributing to strengthening cooperation and improving the quality of education for all.”
