FBI offers $10 million for any information about Chinese Salt Typhoon hackers

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced a $10 million reward for any information leading to the identification of members of the Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon. The FBI suspects this group of cyberattacks on U.S. telecommunications companies and the Treasury Department over the past few years, informs Cybernews.

The statement states that Salt Typhoon conducts targeted cyberespionage operations against critical infrastructure facilities, including telecommunications operators. Hackers penetrated the network, stole call logs, private correspondence and documents obtained by law enforcement officers by court order. The investigation found that the latest wave of attacks affected at least five telecommunications companies between December 2024 and January 2025.

According to experts, Salt Typhoon has been active since at least 2019. In October 2024, it became known about one of the most powerful attacks of this group, during which hackers hacked the networks of Verizon, AT&T and Lumen (formerly CenturyLink).

The FBI is asking the public to come forward with any information that may help identify or apprehend the perpetrators. Informants can expect not only a reward, but also help with resettlement or other protection measures.

While the focus is on Salt Typhoon, the FBI said similar rewards could be offered for information on other related hacking groups, including Volt Typhoon, which also attacks U.S. infrastructure.
