Fico announced his intention to suspend electricity supplies to Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced his intention to initiate the suspension of electricity exports to Ukraine if the transit of Russian oil to Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline is not resumed by Monday, February 23. He published the corresponding statement on his social networks.
“Instructs the relevant Slovak companies to suspend emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine on the same day”. “If Zelensky thinks that Slovakia’s oil blackmail will bring Ukraine closer to the EU, he is gravely mistaken,” Fico said.
In February 2026, electricity imports from Slovakia accounted for about 18% of Ukraine’s total imports. The transit of Russian crude oil through Ukraine stopped on January 27 after Russia’s large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure. As a result, Slovakia and Hungary declared an emergency in the oil sector and accused Kyiv of delaying the restoration of the pipeline.
Both countries have already stopped exporting diesel fuel to Ukraine. Hungary also announced the possibility of stopping electricity and gas supplies if oil transportation is not resumed.
Separately, Robert Fico announced his intention to send a monitoring mission to Brody, where damage to the Druzhba oil pipeline was recorded, in order to obtain an independent expert assessment of the technical condition of the facility.
