For the first time, Ukraine won a court case regarding Russia’s violation of human rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found Russia guilty of human rights violations against the residents of Crimea. Various facts of violations were recorded from the beginning of the annexation of the peninsula. Such a decision in the case “Ukraine v. Russia (regarding Crimea)” was announced by Margarita Sokorenko, the Commissioner of the Ministry of Justice for ECHR cases. This is the first such resolution in favor of Ukraine.
During the court hearings, representatives of Ukraine proved the existence of a number of illegal administrative practices on the part of the Russian Federation. The Russians were found guilty of disappearances of people, illegal detention and ill-treatment, illegal implementation of their own legislation, mass searches, closure of mass media, discrimination against Crimean Tatars, violation of the rights of political prisoners and other offenses.
“This decision is the first in which the international court found the Russian Federation responsible for the policy of large-scale and systematic violations of various human rights and freedoms in the temporarily occupied territory of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.” — said Margarita Sokorenko.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights completely rejected the claims of the Russian Federation in the case “Russia v. Ukraine”. Then Russia tried to accuse Ukraine of murders, kidnappings, forced displacement, interference in the election process, restrictions on the use of the Russian language and attacks on Russian diplomatic institutions. In addition, the Russian side blamed Ukraine for the MH17 disaster, claiming that the tragedy occurred because Kyiv did not close the airspace over the country.
