Former mayor of Zhytomyr becomes new head of the State Agency for Reconstruction

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine appointed Serhiy Sukhomlyn, former mayor of Zhytomyr, as the new head of the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine. About this reported representative of the government in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk.

Information about the possible appointment of Sukhomlin to this position has been circulating in the media for some time. Journalists assumed that he would replace Mustafa Nayem, who left the post of head of the State Agency earlier. Among other versions of his resignation, the possibility of mobilization to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was also discussed. Sukhomlin, who has a military education and served in the tank troops in the past, has repeatedly declared his readiness to join the defense of the country.

According to the “Ukrainian Pravda” publication, as early as July, Sukhomlin expressed his desire to return to military service. Then he told journalists that he was considering such a scenario. His decision to resign as the mayor of Zhytomyr sparked public debate and speculation about his future plans.

What is known about Serhiy Sukhomlyn

Serhiy Sukhomlyn was born in June 1971 in the town of Radyvyliv, Rivne region. He graduated from the Kharkiv Higher Tank Command School with honors, after which he served in Zhytomyr. After completing his military career, he engaged in entrepreneurial activities, holding the positions of commercial director in a number of companies.

Sukhomlyn began his political career in 2006 as a deputy of the Zhytomyr City Council from the “Our Ukraine” party. Subsequently, from 2010 to 2014, he was a deputy of the Zhytomyr Regional Council from the “Front of Change” party. During the Euromaidan events, he actively supported the protest movement. From 2014 to 2015, he held the position of first deputy mayor of Zhytomyr, and in November 2015 he was elected mayor of Zhytomyr. In 2016, he obtained the degree of specialist in finance and credit at the University of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine.
