G7 will not publish joint statement on war in Ukraine due to US position
The G7 leaders will not publish a joint statement after the summit in Canada on the war in Ukraine: the reason for this was the US position. About this informs Reuters.
The United States did not agree with the harsh wording regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine and insisted on their softening.
“The Americans did not want some harsh remarks against Russia to be included in the joint statement because they feared it would jeopardize negotiations with that country to end the war.” – the message says.
Some elements related to a full-scale Russian invasion should be included in a separate statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He is expected to issue an address in which he will emphasize the need for increased sanctions pressure on Russia and reaffirm the G7’s support for US-led peace initiatives.
The G7 leaders confirmed that Ukraine has committed to an unconditional ceasefire, and agreed that Russia should do the same. They expressed a strong willingness to study all available options to increase pressure on the Russian Federation, in particular by introducing financial sanctions.
During discussions with US President Donald Trump, the leaders of the “Big Seven” announced their intention to take a tough stance on Russia, but the head of the White House made it clear that he does not support the idea of introducing new sanctions.
