German Vice-Chancellor Habek declared insufficient support for Ukraine: calls for more help

Both Germany and other partners can do more to support Ukraine in its resistance to Russian aggression, German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck believes.

This was reported by a German publication World.

I believe that we, the Western alliance – Europe, the USA, Canada and others – have done a lot, but not enough to support Ukraine in the last two years… We should support Ukraine not as long as it will be necessary, but provide it with the the amount of aid it needs for its struggle“, said Habek, who previously held pacifist views.

At the same time, he warned against considering the war in Ukraine as a local conflict.

The government official also denied that transferring weapons to a defending country contributes to the expansion of the war. This helps save lives, he stressed.

According to Habek, Germany provided Ukraine with great support and sometimes “went half a step further than others”, in particular, this concerns the transfer of two Patriot air defense systems and the decision to transfer the third.

“Ukraine deserves support not only because it is fighting for its territorial integrity and sovereignty. But also because this fight is also a fight for peace and freedom in Europe… because there is a scenario of a large-scale threat in Europe“, the vice chancellor emphasized.

In addition, he pointed out the importance of the defense industry and expressed regret that the signal to the enterprises of the industry to increase production, in particular, of ammunition, did not come immediately after the start of the war.  Now, Habek is convinced, the countries of the West are obliged to supply equipment and ammunition from their own reserves and not to nod at each other in order to take some step first.
