Germany decided to increase voter turnout with free beer

In the German city of Duisburg, they decided to encourage voters to participate in federal elections by offering free beer. About this informs PICTURE.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, they hope to increase turnout in this unusual way. The initiator of the idea was city director Martin Murrak.
“We want to do something about low voter turnout and strengthen democracy”, he explained.
In the federal elections of 2021, the turnout in Duisburg was 68.1%, which is lower than the national average (76.6%). They plan to introduce a “beer bonus” on the eve of the federal elections on February 15.
On this day, voters who have not yet applied for a postal vote will be able to vote at the Citizens’ Office in Sonnenvale and receive a free “König Pilsener” beer. For non-drinkers, non-alcoholic beer and other beverages will be available.
“There will be plenty of beer if needed, we can restock directly from the brewery,” Murrak added.
