The most valuable collection in history: unique coins are put up for auction (photo)

In less than a month, Stack’s Bowers auction house will begin selling a unique numismatic collection assembled by Danish entrepreneur Lars Emil Bruun, who died in 1923. This collection, which Stack’s Bowers calls “the most valuable in history”, is highly valued not only for its uniqueness, but also for its cultural significance, informs CNN.
The collection, which Bruun began collecting as a child, represents the most complete collection of coins and bills of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Among them there are those that exist in a single copy. In total, the collection includes about 20,000 items, and its insurance value exceeds $72 million.
Lars Emil Bruun, known for the fortune he made from the production and sale of the famous Danish oil, made collecting his life’s work. He once noted: “The collection restores my peace of mind. You can’t think only about work all the time”.

Given the devastation caused by the First World War and the fear of new conflicts, Bruun left strict instructions in his will for his collection. He decreed that for 100 years after his death the collection would be held as a reserve for the Royal Danish Collection of Coins and Medals. Only after this period did he allow it to be sold, and the proceeds to be transferred to the heirs.

Among the most valuable exhibits of the collection is the noble of King Hans of 1496, which became the first gold coin minted in Denmark. Initially, only 20 such coins were created, and today this coin is valued at $662 thousand.
Along with 286 other lots, this coin will be auctioned on September 14. Sales are expected to exceed $14 million in just one day. Those interested can see the collection for themselves in Copenhagen during the next two weeks before the auction.
We will remind you that the Ukrainian silver commemorative coin “Courage to be.UA” won in the nomination “Best coin about a modern event” and entered the top 10 coins of the world according to the results of the international “Coin of the Year” competition.
