Greenland’s future prime minister rejects Trump’s encroachment on the island

Greenland Prime Minister-to-be Jens-Frederik Nielsen rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims to the island, stressing that Greenlanders should determine their own future as the country gradually moves towards independence from Denmark. About this informs The Hill.

“We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders and we want to have our own independence in the future. We want to build our own country.”, — said Nielsen.

The Demokraatit party, led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, received 29.9% of the vote. She advocates higher housing and education standards, delaying independence until Greenland can become economically self-sufficient. For comparison, four years ago this political force gained only 9.1% and took fourth place.

Currently, 31 deputies elected to the parliament have to determine priorities in such areas as diversification of the economy, development of infrastructure, improvement of the health care system and formation of a strategy to counter the American program “America above all”.
