Ukrainian refugees

How many Ukrainians are currently in Spain?

The majority of Spaniards support the actions of their government in support of Ukraine. Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez announced that after the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the country accepted more than 200,000 Ukrainians

“There are now more than 200,000 Ukrainian refugees living in Spain, despite our great distance from Ukraine,” he said at the NATO Public Forum in Washington, where the NATO summit is taking place. According to Sanchez, the majority of Spaniards support the government’s efforts regarding Ukraine, “because we understand what is at stake. This is not only the protection of territorial integrity, freedom, the right to existence of the nation, but also the support of peace based on clear principles,” he added.

Ukrainians who arrived in Spain found shelter in different regions of the country, in particular in Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia, many of them gained access to social services, medical care, education and employment opportunities. Also, Spain provides significant humanitarian aid to Ukraine, because since the beginning of the war, the Spanish government and charitable organizations have sent tons of humanitarian goods to Ukraine, including medical supplies, food, hygiene, and other necessary aid.

In addition, Spain supports Ukraine in the international arena, advocating for sanctions against Russia and providing diplomatic support in international organizations such as the UN and the EU. The Spanish government is also actively working to attract other countries to support Ukraine.

Spain has a long tradition of accepting refugees from different countries, and in the past the country has also given asylum to refugees from Syria, Latin America and other regions, showing its willingness to help people in difficult times. Currently, Ukrainians have also faced this.
