Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians return to Gaza after the declaration of a truce between Hamas and Israel
Palestinians have begun returning en masse to the northern Gaza Strip amid a shaky ceasefire in a 15-month war that has devastated the enclave and displaced nearly 2 million residents. Many of them have been moved several times. About this informs France 24.
“Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians poured into the most devastated Gaza Strip on Monday after Israel opened up the north for the first time in its war with Hamas, dramatically reversing their exodus 15 months ago.”, says the message.
Jubilant crowds of Palestinians, including those holding babies or pushing wheelchairs, move along the coastal road, carrying cots, water bottles and other essentials. Armed masked Hamas fighters make a victory sign while Israeli tanks watch them from a nearby hill.
According to the UN, more than 200,000 people have moved north since the beginning of the week. Palestinians who have been living in makeshift camps and temporary shelters for a long time, including former schools, have longed to return to their homes, even if they are damaged or destroyed.
