Hungary blocks EU statement on presidential elections in Belarus

Hungary blocked the joint appeal of the EU countries regarding the non-recognition of the presidential elections in Belarus. About this informs Radio Svoboda.
“Hungary under the leadership of Viktor Orbán has repeatedly opposed the expansion of sanctions against Russia and the increase of European aid to Ukraine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijártó, is the only representative of the leadership of the countries of the European Union who regularly visits Minsk.” – says the report.
At first, Slovakia also refused, together with Hungary, to support the draft statement on behalf of all 27 EU member states. Subsequently, Slovakia nevertheless signed the document, and Hungary remained the only EU country that did not do so.
“Today’s sham elections in Belarus were neither free nor fair. The people of Belarus deserve a real vote on who governs their country. Ruthless and unprecedented repression of human rights, restrictions on participation in political life and access to independent media in Belarus have deprived electoral process of any legitimacy”, – says the EU joint statement.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Anatolii Glaz, commenting on the draft statement, called it “gross interference in the election processes of a sovereign state.” Earlier, the head of the EU diplomatic service, Kaya Callas, called the presidential elections in Belarus fictitious, pointing to their illegitimacy.
