IAEA experts recorded shelling near the occupied nuclear power plant
Experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who are at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZAEP), recorded incoming and outgoing shelling near the plant. This is mentioned in the statement of the IAEA press service.
“Today, the IAEA team at the ZNPP heard several incoming and outgoing shelling from the territory near the facility. ZANEP reported that two shells hit 1.25 km from the perimeter of the facility. The shelling increases the risks for nuclear safety at the ZNPP, which has been without external power supply for almost two weeks, the general director said, the report says.
Let us remind you that on September 23, the tenth blackout occurred at the temporarily occupied ZNPP since the beginning of the occupation. According to the research of the international organization “Greenpeace Ukraine” from September 27, conducted on the basis of satellite images, the loss of the last power line was the result of deliberate sabotage by Russian troops.
On September 30, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, reacted to the situation, stressing that the ZNPP has been disconnected from the Ukrainian energy system for seven days. The station is powered by backup diesel generators, one of which has already failed. He emphasized that the situation at the facility is emergency and critical.
The European Union has called on Russia to immediately stop hostilities near the ZANP and restore external electricity supply. In addition, the EU stated that the only way to reduce the risks is to withdraw Russian troops from the station and return it to the control of Ukraine.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiga, emphasized that Russia deliberately cut off the power supply to the temporarily occupied ZNPP. He noted that the shutdown, which has the nature of a test, was carried out manually, as the Russian Federation is preparing to connect the station to its power system.
