In Brussels, the screening of the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with EU norms under the negotiation section “Fishing and water fishing”
A bilateral meeting between Ukraine and the European Commission within the framework of the official screening of Ukrainian conformity has started in Brussels legislation to EU norms under negotiation chapter 13 “Fisheries and fisheries”.
The Ukrainian delegation was headed by Taras Kachka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine. The delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine headed by Deputy Minister Taras Vysotsky, as well as representatives of the State Fisheries Agency and people’s deputies of Ukraine.
Opening the meeting, Taras Kachka emphasized Ukraine’s desire to develop the fishing sector in accordance with the European principles of sustainable use of resources and the fight against illegal, unregulated and unregistered fishing (IUU fishing).
“Today we will present our compliance with EU standards in this area, as well as demonstrate the advantages of the Ukrainian fishing industry. It is sufficiently developed and has significant economic importance. Ukraine is ready to further develop the industry in accordance with EU rules for the sake of mutual interest and economic development of both Ukraine and the entire Union, Taras Kachka noted.
In his welcoming speech, Taras Vysotskyi thanked the European Commission for its constant support and open, constructive dialogue. According to him, such a partnership played an important role in the path of Ukraine’s European integration, despite the serious challenges that the agricultural sector is facing today.
The Deputy Minister of Economy emphasized that the 13th negotiation chapter covers a key area that is the basis of the rational use, protection and restoration of aquatic biological resources:
“Adaptation of national legislation to the EU legal system in the field of fisheries and aquaculture is a powerful tool for modernization of the industry, ensuring sustainable management of aquatic biological resources and development of competitive fisheries. We demonstrate the systematic and sustainable nature of reforms in the field of fisheries with the aim of joining the common fisheries policy of the European Union. This process is difficult, but irreversible, and we are ready for further work.
