In Russia, the level of crimes committed by military personnel is increasing: Bloomberg

According to Bloomberg, the number of non-military crimes committed by military personnel in Russia increased by more than 20% last year. The increase in cases of violence, theft and drug-related crimes is especially noticeable.

Experts attribute this phenomenon to the return of former prisoners who took part in hostilities under the contract with PMC “Wagner”, as well as to social upheavals and traumas faced by soldiers after military conflicts.

Bloomberg quotes a local sociologist who points out that crime historically rises after military conflicts because of the social upheaval and trauma faced by soldiers.

In 2023, the number of crimes committed by the military quadrupled compared to 2021, reaching 4,409 cases.

Economists predict that the post-war spike in crime could cost Russia up to 0.6% of GDP through direct costs to lives and property, as well as increased spending on social security and security.

It will be recalled that the Russian army intensified its attacks in the Donetsk region, while at the same time reducing their intensity in the north of the Kharkiv region, which may indicate preparations for the summer offensive or its beginning.
