In Sydney, a man opened fire on a street, wounding at least 20 people
In one of the busy areas of Sydney (Australia), a man opened fire on passers-by and cars. As a result of the incident, at least 20 people were injured, most of them from broken glass. This was reported by the police of the state of New South Wales, reports Le Figaro.
According to law enforcement officers, the suspect shot indiscriminately, including at passing police cars.
“ Between 50 and 100 shots could have been fired”, said Acting NSW Police Commissioner Stephen Perry.
Two hours after the start of the shooting, the police detained a 60-year-old man suspected of the attack. He was found in one of Sydney’s apartments. During the arrest, he was injured and was hospitalized.
One man, wounded by a bullet, is in serious condition. Another 19 people were injured by fragments of glass and other materials, several of them were taken to the hospital.
Mass shootings in Australia are extremely rare. After the 1996 tragedy in Port Arthur (Tasmania), when a gunman killed 35 people, the country introduced a strict ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
