In Ukraine, the area of mined territories has decreased by 20%: Shmyhal
The area of potentially mined territories in Ukraine decreased by more than 20% compared to the end of 2022 and currently amounts to about 137 thousand square kilometers. About this reported Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
According to him, the main part of these territories is agricultural land.
“The state agrarian register should become the only tool for cooperation in providing compensation for costs for humanitarian demining of agricultural lands. Data should be entered into the register more promptly.” Shmyhal emphasized.
The head of the government instructed relevant ministries and responsible bodies to speed up the launch of the Register of Territories Contaminated by Explosive Objects, as well as to prepare a plan to attract international funding directly for demining works.
The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine has already formed a broad international anti-mine coalition, which includes more than 50 countries, and has attracted $1.2 billion in aid for clearing the territories.
“Humanitarian demining is a key element of rapid recovery. Our goal is to constantly increase the pace of work in order to free Ukrainian fields, villages, cities, and infrastructure from mines as soon as possible.” — emphasized Denys Shmyhal.
Demining is currently carried out by the State Emergency Service, the National Police, the Ministry of Defense and non-governmental operators. In total, 112 certified operators work in the country, eight of which are foreign. More than 9,000 specialists are involved in their composition.
We will remind that since the beginning of 2025, 30 auctions have been held in Ukraine for the demining of agricultural lands with a total area of 5.37 thousand hectares. According to the results of the bidding, the final cost of the works amounted to 336.6 million hryvnias.
