National Police Day
July 4 Ukraine celebrates the National Police Day, which was launched in 2018 after the President signed the corresponding decree. Until now, the holiday was celebrated on August 4, the day the President of Ukraine signed the Law “On the National Police”.
After the Revolution of Dignity, there was a need to seriously reform the law enforcement system. Ukraine took the experience of Georgia as an example and in the fall of 2014 presented the concept of reforming the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which provided for the creation of the National Police instead of the militia.
On July 2, 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On the National Police”, and already on July 4, the first staff of the National Police took the oath on Sofia Square in Kyiv. Lviv became the second city where the police started working, and Odesa became the third. Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 97 of April 4, 2018 amended Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 693 of December 9, 2015, which established that the Day of the National Police of Ukraine is celebrated annually on July 4 in honor of the event in 2015, when the first patrol police officers took the oath.
Today, in the conditions of a full-scale invasion of Russia, the National Police officers play an important role in the resistance of the Ukrainian people to armed aggression. In May 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers amended the regulations on the National Police, giving it new powers. Now the police can interact with the Armed Forces, the National Guard, border guards, the SBU and the special transport service to fight against saboteurs and illegal paramilitary groups. The National Police also helps the State Border Service to detect channels of illegal border crossing, movement of weapons and ammunition.
Police officers not only monitor order, but also help evacuate residents of regions where hostilities are taking place, identify saboteurs and collaborators, investigate war crimes by the occupiers, and search for missing people, including children.
Day of the forensic expert of Ukraine
July 4 In Ukraine, the Day of the Forensic Expert is celebrated in accordance with the presidential decree of June 10, 2009. This holiday was initiated by the Coordinating Council for Forensic Expertise at the Ministry of Justice. The President was guided by the fact that judicial expert activity plays a very important role in protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring a fair judiciary.
