In 2024, more than 176,000 babies were born in Ukraine. About this it is said in the message of the Ministry of Justice, which also published statistics on the original names most often chosen by Ukrainian parents in 2024.
Traditional favorites among names
Each child receives its own unique name, which often becomes a reflection of time, culture and family traditions, but sometimes they surprise with their originality. Among the most popular female names in 2024 were the classic variants, which have been favorites among Ukrainians for many years. Most often, newborn girls were named Anna, Sofia, Maria, Kateryna, Solomiya, Polina, Victoria and Milana.
Boys were most often called by the names Artem, Maxim, Bohdan, Dmytro, Mykhailo, Andriy, Denis, Danylo, Timofey, Makar, and Mark. These names are firmly at the top of the rankings, because they not only sound harmonious, but also have a deep historical and cultural meaning.

Despite the popularity of traditional names, in 2024 parents increasingly chose unusual options. Such names often reflect the desire of parents to emphasize the uniqueness of their children or refer to symbolism related to history, culture or current trends.
Among the unusual female names were Barbie, Mercy, Dzvinka, Yangolya, Ruta, Horynya, Jasmin, Roksolana, Vasilisa, Olympiada, Luna, Kvitka, Sulamita, Malva and Doyana.

Choosing a name for a child has always been more than just a parent’s decision. It is a certain symbol that often reflects cultural and historical events. For example, the popularity of the names Sofia and Artem can be related to their harmony and frequent use in popular films or literature.
On the other hand, original names such as Dzvinka, Zoreslav or Tamerlan demonstrate the desire of parents to stand out, to give the child uniqueness. It can also be the result of being influenced by current trends, such as movies, TV shows, or popular cultural phenomena.
What psychologists and experts say
Psychologists emphasize that the choice of a name is important for the future life of the child. Simplicity and ease of pronunciation often help the child to adapt more quickly in the team, while very unusual names can cause unnecessary attention and sometimes misunderstanding.
“The main thing is that the name is comfortable for the child. It must be understandable in the environment where it will grow and correspond to the cultural context.” – says psychologist Olga Dmytruk.
Original names can also be perceived as a reflection of the search for national identity. Options such as Roksolana, Dobrynya or Horynya appeal to Ukrainian history and culture, while Solomon or Tamerlan demonstrate openness to other cultures.
Therefore, despite the challenges of war, the birth of children remains a symbol of hope, continuation of life and struggle for the future. Choosing a name for newborns is a kind of message for tomorrow, which reflects both the desire to preserve traditions and readiness for new opportunities.
Ukrainians continue to create their future even in the most difficult times, and every new name that appears on the lists of newborns is a part of this great history.
