Lithuanian government resigns after Prime Minister resigns

On August 4, Lithuania’s nineteenth government resigned following Prime Minister Gintautas Palutskas’ announcement of a resignation. About this informs LRT.

“Having decided to resign from the post of Prime Minister, I am announcing that the nineteenth government of Lithuania is resigning. It may sound a little dramatic, but I am resigning, and you will continue to work temporarily until the new Prime Minister decides what, how and to what extent the changes will be made.” Palutskas said at the beginning of the government meeting.

On August 4, Palutkas must also submit an official resignation request to the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda. The current Minister of Finance Rimantas Šajjus will temporarily serve as the head of the government. According to the constitutional procedure, the president of Lithuania must sign the decree on the resignation of the government and appoint a temporary acting prime minister. Within 15 days, Nauseda must also submit to the Diet the candidacy of a new head of government.

The Social Democratic Party, which currently has the largest faction in parliament, plans to nominate its own candidate for the post of prime minister. If the Seimas approves the candidacy, the new head of government must present the composition of the Cabinet and the action program agreed with the president within 15 days.

We will remind, on July 31, the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda announced the decision of Palutskas to resign. The day before, the Lithuanian mass media reported that the Financial Crimes Investigation Service conducted searches at the company Dankora, which is owned by the wife of Palutskas’ brother. The company received European funding and purchased battery systems from the Garnis company, which is owned by Paluckas himself. The prime minister himself denies all the accusations.
