Lubinets ordered an inspection of Monobank due to an incident with personal data

The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets announced the start of an investigation into possible violations of the law following the actions of Monobank co-founder Oleg Horohovsky, who had previously declared the publication of a client’s personal data unlawful. Lubinets wrote about this in Telegram.

According to him, the mere fact of admitting a mistake does not exempt from liability if it concerns a possible violation of the norms on the protection of personal data and banking secrecy.

“I reacted to the situation immediately — proceedings were opened and an investigation into the circumstances of a possible violation of the legislation on the protection of personal data and banking secrecy was initiated,” Lubinets noted.

He also emphasized that personal data cannot be used as a means of public pressure or humiliation, and the law should be the same for everyone. According to the ombudsman, no public outcry or emotions can justify the alleged violation. The results of the inspection and further decisions will be announced after receiving all the necessary information from the bank and relevant authorities.

Previously, Oleg Gorohovsky posted a photo of a bank client online, taken during a video verification. He stated that the Russian flag was visible in the background of the photo. Later, the woman explained that the Slovenian flag was actually on the wall, and also criticized the publication of her photo without permission.

On the evening of March 11, Gorohovsky apologized for this post and explained that he had acted emotionally, reacting to the Russian tricolor. He wrote on Telegram that after many years of war, this symbol causes him great anger, so he acted hastily and without proper thought. The Monobank co-founder also assured clients that their personal data remains protected.
