March 27: holidays and events on this day
March 27 is celebrated as International Theatre Day, International Whisky Day and Nephrologist Day. This day combines events from different eras – from medieval battles to decisions that have influenced modern politics, economics and technology.
International Theatre Day
This is a professional holiday for stage workers, which was launched by the International Theatre Institute in 1961 at the initiative of the French artist Jean Cocteau. The date unites actors, directors, playwrights, set designers and everyone who works on creating performances, reminding us of the importance of theatre as an art form that conveys experience and emotions through live presence.
Theatre has a centuries-old history, starting with ancient rituals and developing to modern experimental stages. In different countries, it preserves national traditions, language and cultural memory, while at the same time responding to current events. In Ukraine, theater plays an important role in cultural life, supporting interest in classical and modern works and forming its own stage school.
Interesting facts
In ancient Greece, actors performed in masks that amplified their voices and helped the audience distinguish characters even in large open amphitheaters where thousands of people could gather.
In medieval Europe, women were forbidden from going on stage for a long time, so all female roles were performed by men or teenagers, and this practice was preserved even in the early plays of William Shakespeare.
The oldest operating theater in Ukraine is considered to be the Lviv Theater named after Maria Zankovetska, the building of which was opened in 1842, and it has preserved a significant part of the historical interior.
In Japan, the Kabuki theater is known for the fact that all roles, including female ones, are traditionally performed by men, and the skill is passed down within acting dynasties for generations.
In Kyiv, there is a unique theater “Koleso”, which is located in an old house on Andriyivskyi Uzviz, and part of its premises preserves the atmosphere of a 19th-century dwelling.
In the 19th century, spectators could behave very noisily at performances: they talked, ate, applauded in the middle of the action, or even booed the actors if they did not like the play.
One of the smallest theaters in the world is located in the Czech Republic and has only a few seats for the audience, creating an almost homely atmosphere of the performance.
The Ukrainian theater “Berezil”, founded by Les Kurbas, was the first to actively use avant-garde stage solutions that were ahead of their time and influenced the development of European theater.
International Whiskey Day
This is an unofficial holiday dedicated to the culture of consuming this drink and its centuries-old history. The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of Michael James Jackson, who made a significant contribution to the popularization of whiskey, describing its styles, aromas and production features. His approach to tasting and evaluating influenced the modern perception of the drink in the world.
Whiskey is made in different countries, including Scotland, Ireland, the USA and Japan, where their own traditions and technologies have been formed. The basis of the drink is cereals, and aging in wooden barrels determines the taste and aroma. Differences in climate, water and distillation methods create a wide range of styles – from light and soft to rich and smoky.
Interesting facts
The word “whisky” comes from the Gaelic expression “uisge beatha”, meaning “water of life”, and originally referred to any distilled alcohol.
In Scotland, it is a law that whiskey must be aged in barrels for at least three years before it can be officially called Scotch whiskey.
Aging barrels were often previously used to store bourbon, sherry or wine, and they give the drink a significant part of its aroma and color.
In Japan, whiskey production began under the influence of Scottish traditions, but over time its own style was formed, which is distinguished by the precision of technology and attention to detail.
In the United States, bourbon must contain at least 51% corn in its composition, which makes it sweeter compared to other types of whiskey.
There are collector bottles of whiskey, the cost of which reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars due to the rarity and age of the drink.
Ukraine also has its own whiskey producers, who experiment with local ingredients and climatic conditions to create unique flavors.
Some distilleries are located in very remote places, including islands, where the marine climate affects aging and adds salty notes to the drink.
Nephrologist Day
This is a professional holiday for nephrologists – specialists who diagnose and treat kidney diseases. Nephrology is an important branch of medicine that covers conditions such as chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, and fluid and salt imbalances. The work of these doctors is associated with long-term observation of patients and the selection of complex treatment regimens.
Modern nephrology is closely related to the development of technologies, in particular, the hemodialysis procedure and kidney transplantation. In Ukraine, this specialty is of great importance due to the prevalence of diseases related to lifestyle and environmental factors. Nephrologists work in hospitals, specialized centers, and intensive care units, helping to maintain the quality of life of patients.
Interesting facts
The kidneys filter approximately 150–180 liters of blood every day, producing only about 1–2 liters of urine, which indicates the high efficiency of their work.
The first successful hemodialysis machine was created by the Dutch doctor Willem Kolff during World War II, using improvised materials.
A person can live with one kidney, and many donors after transplantation lead a full life without significant limitations.
In Ukraine, the number of patients requiring dialysis is increasing every year, and this stimulates the development of specialized medical centers in different regions.
The kidneys play an important role in regulating blood pressure by producing hormones that affect blood vessels and the volume of fluid in the body.
One of the early symptoms of kidney disease can be subtle, so many diseases develop for a long time without any noticeable symptoms.
Kidney transplantation is one of the most successful operations in modern medicine in terms of patient survival rates.
Some animals, such as camels, have a special kidney structure that allows them to retain water as much as possible in desert conditions.
