March 4 is celebrated as World Engineering Day, World Obesity Day, World Day Against Sexual Exploitation, International Scrapbooking Industry Day and International Game Makers Day. Over the centuries, this day has been the date of important decisions, reforms and events that have influenced politics, culture and international relations.
World Engineering Day
The decision to establish this day was supported by UNESCO in 2019, and the day was first celebrated in 2020. It was introduced to draw attention to the role of engineers in creating and maintaining infrastructure, developing industry, transport, energy, medicine and digital technologies.
Engineering covers the construction of structures, the design of machines and mechanisms, the development of software, the creation of materials and technical systems. Engineers are responsible for the safety of bridges, buildings, aircraft, power grids and production lines, and work with precise calculations and complex technical processes. Most modern technologies — from mobile communications to spacecraft — are the result of engineering solutions.

The world’s first electric tram went into operation in 1881 in Berlin. It was created by German engineer Werner von Siemens, and it was this development that initiated the large-scale development of electric urban transport in Europe.
The world’s largest transport aircraft, the An-225 Mriya, was developed in Kyiv. Its wingspan was 88.4 meters, and the maximum take-off weight exceeded 600 tons. The aircraft was created to transport the Buran spacecraft, and it set more than 200 world records.
Igor Sikorsky, who was born in Kyiv, became one of the pioneers of the world helicopter industry. His helicopters in the United States initiated the mass production of this type of machine, which changed aviation and rescue services.
The Arsenalna metro station in Kyiv is located at a depth of more than 100 meters underground and is one of the deepest metro stations in the world. This depth was chosen because of the complex terrain of the right bank of the Dnieper.

Until 2020, this day was celebrated on October 11, but the date was changed for broader international coordination. The initiator of the introduction of this day was the World Obesity Federation, which unites scientists, doctors and organizations working in the field of prevention and treatment of excess body weight.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of obesity as a chronic disease associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer and other complications. Obesity is determined by body mass index, which is calculated as the ratio of weight to height. The problem affects both adults and children, and its prevalence is increasing in most countries of the world.

World Day Against Sexual Exploitation
This day was initiated in 2009 by the non-governmental organization GIPF to draw attention to the problem of human trafficking, forced prostitution, sexual violence and the exploitation of vulnerable groups. The date unites initiatives from different countries aimed at informing the public and supporting victims.
Sexual exploitation includes coercion to provide sexual services, involving children in pornography, forced marriage and other forms of violence related to obtaining profit. The victims are most often women and children, but the problem also affects men and adolescents. According to international organizations, a significant proportion of cases remain unsolved due to the fear of the victims, social pressure and the activities of organized criminal networks.

According to international studies, sexual exploitation is one of the most profitable forms of transnational crime in the world, second only to drug and arms trafficking.
Most victims of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation are recruited through acquaintances, relatives or false job offers, and not through kidnapping, as is often depicted in films.
The Internet and social networks have become one of the main recruitment tools, especially among adolescents, who are attracted by promises of a modeling career or quick money.
Ukraine has remained a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking for many years, with some victims being exploited both abroad and within the country.

International Scrapbooking Industry Day
This day is dedicated to the field of creative design of photo albums, postcards and commemorative pages using paper, decorative elements and various hand-made techniques. The date unites manufacturers of materials, designers and craftsmen working in this field.
Scrapbooking was formed as a separate direction of creativity at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, although the tradition of saving clippings, letters and commemorative records existed much earlier. The modern industry includes the production of special paper, stamps, cutting knives, decorative ornaments and digital templates. In addition to a hobby, for many craftsmen it has become a professional activity related to the production of author’s albums and printed products.

The tradition of creating albums with clippings and personal notes was popular in Europe as early as the 17th century, and in England such collections were called commonplace books and were used to save quotes, recipes and important events.
The impetus for the development of modern scrapbooking was given by the advent of affordable color printing and photography at the end of the 20th century, which made personal photo albums a mass phenomenon.
In the USA, scrapbooking has become a multi-million dollar industry with its own brands, specialized stores and separate lines of tools created exclusively for decorative page design.
There is digital scrapbooking, in which graphic editors are used instead of paper and glue, and finished works are saved in the format of electronic albums or printed to order.
In Ukraine, scrapbooking has been actively developing since the beginning of the 2010s, local manufacturers of designer paper and decorative elements have appeared, and Ukrainian craftsmen participate in international creative projects.
Some author’s scrapbooks are created in a single copy and combine hand-stamping, calligraphy and complex designs with hidden pockets and folding elements, which makes them closer to art objects than to ordinary photo albums.
International Game Masters Day
This holiday appeared in December 2002 as an initiative of communities associated with role-playing and board games. The date is dedicated to people who organize the gameplay, create scenarios, manage the development of the plot and are responsible for the interaction between participants.
A game master in tabletop role-playing games performs the functions of a narrator, arbiter of rules and coordinator of events. He prepares the world, characters and conflicts, improvises depending on the decisions of the players and monitors the balance of the game. In digital games, the term can refer to specialists who manage game events in online projects or support user communities.

The term Dungeon Master became established after the release of the game Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 and became one of the most famous titles for a game master in the history of tabletop role-playing games.
Different systems use their own names for this role: Game Master, Storyteller, Keeper or Referee, which reflects the peculiarities of the mechanics and style of the game.
Professional game masters conduct commercial sessions, receiving payment for preparing the script and running campaigns, and the demand for such services has increased with the development of online video communication platforms.
There are academic studies devoted to the role of the game master as a facilitator of group dynamics, since the level of interaction and involvement of participants depends on his style.
