Merz to go to Trump with agreed EU position on tariffs

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would travel to Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump to present a common position of the European Union on the tariffs imposed by the American side. This was reported by Politico.

“I will go to Washington with a coordinated European position,” said the head of the German government, emphasizing that the issue of tariff policy falls within the competence of the entire EU, and not individual member states.

Merz’s meeting with the US president is expected to take place in early March. The European Union countries are currently analyzing the consequences of the US Supreme Court’s decision for transatlantic trade.

On February 20, the court canceled global import tariffs that Donald Trump had been introducing since spring 2025. After that, the US president announced new tariffs on imports of goods and raw materials to the US in the amount of 10%, and later announced an increase in the rate to 15%.

On April 2, 2025, Trump announced the introduction of tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories, setting a minimum rate of 10%. A 20 percent tariff was envisaged for goods from the European Union, and 34 percent for China. Individual tariff rates were determined for individual states.

In addition, from April 3, the US administration introduced a 25% tariff on all cars imported into the country.
