Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir executives enlisted in the US Army Reserve
The US Army has formed a special reserve unit, Detachment 201: Executive Innovation Corps, which includes executives from Palantir, Meta and OpenAI. The unit’s goal is to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into military planning and operations. About this informs The Register.
The new division includes Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil, and former OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Bob McGrew. They received the rank of lieutenant colonels in the US Army Reserve and will serve as advisors, working on specific projects to implement technologies in military operations.
Palantir has long worked with the US military and last year won a $480 million contract for the Maven project, which involves the use of artificial intelligence to develop military strategies.
Meta begins cooperation with the defense company Anduril Industries within the EagleEye project, which involves the creation of helmets, glasses and other devices with elements of augmented and virtual reality. These devices will be equipped with sensors to improve the soldiers’ hearing and vision.
OpenAI, for its part, is also involved in the development of military technologies, revising its previous position of exclusively civilian products. The company is working with Anduril Industries to create anti-drone systems and other technological solutions for the military.
Members of Detachment 201 will work remotely and must complete a minimum of 120 hours per year. As noted by the technical director of Palantir, the integration of the latest technologies in the military sphere allows combining “American innovations with vital military tasks”, which, in his opinion, will be a key factor in the victory of the United States in the 21st century.
