Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the consequences of the use of enemy mines and explosive remnants of war have been extremely tragic for the country’s civilian population. According to the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, as of 1 October 2024, 1,041 people have already been injured, 99 of whom are children.
Representatives of various professions and social groups are the most vulnerable to such threats. In particular, a significant number of victims are farmers – 191 people – due to their constant presence in the fields, where explosive remnants of war often remain. A significant number of victims are also unemployed, including 73 pensioners. In addition, 110 of the victims are critical infrastructure workers, 78 are drivers and 86 are students.
Every case of mine explosion among Ukrainian citizens is not ignored by the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine. Criminal proceedings are being opened against the Russian Federation for violations of the rules and customs of warfare, as the laying of mines and explosive devices in civilian areas not only violates international law but also has catastrophic consequences for defenceless people.
