MP commits suicide in Finnish parliament building

A deputy from the Social Democratic Party committed suicide in the parliament building of Finland. About this reported edition of Yle.

The police of Helsinki confirmed the fact of the death of a person in the premises of the parliament. Investigators are establishing the causes of the tragedy, and currently there is no reason to consider the event criminal. The head of the security service of the parliament, Aaro Toivonen, said that he did not rule out the version of suicide, but did not specify where exactly the incident took place, and did not confirm whether the deceased was a member of parliament or an employee of the legislative body.

Finnish mass media reported that it is about MP Eemeli Peltonen from the Social Democratic Party. The politician previously spoke openly about kidney problems and was on sick leave in the summer, missing the last sessions of the parliament.

After the announcement of his death, the state flag was lowered at half-mast on the parliament building. Ministers of the National Coalition Party, who participated in the government meeting, honored Peltonen’s memory with a moment of silence.

The Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, said in his speech:

“Recently, we received tragic news from our common workplace – the parliament. One of our colleagues died in its premises.”

He expressed his condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of the deceased.
