NATO opens landing operations center in Norway: strengthening Arctic defenses amid growing tensions with Russia

In the north of Norway, in the city of Sørreisa, the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) opened a new training center for amphibious operations. This is part of the Alliance’s strategy to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic region amid rising tensions with Russia. This is reported Newsweek.

The newly created facility will become a training base for military personnel from NATO countries, including the United States, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Although Norway has no airborne troops of its own, the region is home to its key army and special forces units.

Norway spent 16 billion kroner (about 1.44 billion dollars) on the creation and modernization of military infrastructure. The main goal of the project is to provide joint training necessary for the defense of Norway, the northern region and the entire NATO territory in case of crisis situations or military threats.

“Joint training of the military is key to the defense of our country and Euro-Atlantic security,” Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram emphasized.

The decision to create the center was made due to the aggravation of the geopolitical situation, in particular due to the continuation of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Norway has significantly strengthened its military infrastructure, especially in the strategically important region of Troms.

Norway and other Northern European countries show strong support for Ukraine. The Norwegian government recently increased aid funding to Ukraine, allocating NOK 35 billion (approximately $3.16 billion) for 2025.

In addition, the governments of seven European countries – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Poland and Sweden – declared their intention to increase the amount of aid to Ukraine and strengthen collective responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security.

The opening of the amphibious operations training center in Sørreys is another step for NATO to strengthen its defense capabilities in the north. The Alliance continues to expand the capabilities for the collective protection of its members, responding to modern security challenges.
