NATO prepares to review relations with Russia for the first time in 25 years: Politico
NATO will review its strategy in relations with Russia due to the growing threat from the Kremlin. This issue will be one of the main topics at the meeting of defense ministers of the Alliance countries, which will take place next week. About this informs Politico, citing senior US officials.
The article notes that NATO plans to develop a new strategy that will meet current challenges, in particular in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These changes are part of preparations for the June NATO summit, which will take place in 2025.
A key topic of discussion will be the future of the NATO-Russia “Basic Act” signed in 1997, as well as the NATO-Russia Council, whose work was suspended after the start of the war. Some NATO member states are convinced that the Alliance should develop a new approach to relations with Moscow, as the situation has changed significantly compared to previous years.
During the meeting, it is also planned to discuss internal differences among the members of the Alliance, in particular the positions of Hungary and Slovakia, which continue to maintain ties with the Kremlin, despite the bloc’s general anti-Russian policy.
It’s also worth noting that on Monday, October 14, NATO begins its annual Steadfast Noon nuclear exercise, during which the military will simulate missions where aircraft are supposed to carry nuclear warheads.
In addition, on October 3, newly appointed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made his first official visit to Kyiv, where he held talks with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
