New Pope sees AI as a potential threat to humanity

The new Pope Leo XIV identified artificial intelligence as one of the potential threats to humanity. According to the pontiff, the development of AI is one of the key challenges facing human civilization today. This was reported by The Verge.

Leo XIV emphasized the fact that modern technological progress, in particular the rapid spread of artificial intelligence, endangers such values as human dignity, social justice and labor rights. He emphasized the need for a response from the Church, which must apply its social teaching to protect people.

In his first official address to the College of Cardinals, he explained why he chose that name, recalling Pope Leo XIII, who led the Church during the Industrial Revolution and called for social justice.

“Nowadays, the Church offers everyone a treasury of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and development in the field of artificial intelligence, which pose new challenges for the protection of human dignity, justice and work”, the new Pope told the College of Cardinals.

His predecessor, Pope Francis, also repeatedly expressed concern about the impact of AI, particularly the risks of manipulation and the creation of false narratives, and called for global regulation of the technology.

Leo XIV made it clear that the main focus of his pontificate will be the ethical dimension of technological progress and the protection of human rights in the context of digital transformation. He called for a responsible approach to AI to prevent its potential harm to society.
