OPCW investigation: banned gas found in samples from Ukraine

The Prohibited Chemical Weapons Organization has established direct evidence of the use of the banned CS chemical agent in the war zone on the territory of Ukraine. This fact is a serious violation of the international norm.

About this it is said in a statement by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The event that happened on September 20 near the village of Illinka in the Dnipropetrovsk region was the first officially recorded case of the use of chemical weapons. This fact is a direct violation of international humanitarian law and creates an additional threat to the civilian population in the region.

At the same time, the organization emphasized that the report did not aim to establish the source or origin of the toxic chemical substance, limiting itself only to recording its detection.

This is the first time that the organization has officially confirmed the use of gas intended for mass destruction in areas where hostilities are ongoing.

Roman Padun, head of Kurakhiv city military administration, on Facebook told, that Illinka is under constant shelling from the Russian army and ten other settlements of the community.

According to the command of the Armed Forces Support Forces, from the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022 to April 2024, 1,891 cases of the use of ammunition containing dangerous chemicals by the Russian military were recorded.
