OpenAI invests over $230 million in new AI lab in Singapore
OpenAI will open its first applied artificial intelligence lab outside the United States in Singapore. The project is being implemented as part of a multi-year partnership with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information.
The total investment will exceed S$300 million, or about $234 million. The company also plans to grow its technical team in Singapore to more than 200 people over the coming years. OpenAI’s office in the country has been operating since 2024.
The new lab will focus on the practical implementation of AI solutions in government services, digital governance, the financial sector, healthcare, secure digital infrastructure and support for local startups. Singapore has identified the development of artificial intelligence as one of its strategic priorities. The country’s government, led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, is investing in the digital skills of citizens to mitigate the impact of automation on the labor market.
OpenAI’s expansion comes amid global competition from Anthropic, Google and other AI developers. Singapore also has its own AI centers developed by Google DeepMind and Nvidia.
