Over 213,000 war crimes committed by Russian military documented in Ukraine

As of early March 2026, about 213,200 episodes of war crimes committed by Russian military personnel have been documented in Ukraine. So far, Ukrainian courts have already sentenced 242 Russian citizens, of whom 22 were convicted during in-person trials.

This was reported by Taras Semkiv, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in Armed Conflict, Prosecutor General’s Office.

“Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, we are talking about 1,127 suspects, 809 accused and 242 convicted persons. Moreover, 30 suspects are prisoners of war, of whom 27 have already been charged. Accordingly, the indictments against them have been submitted to the court, and 22 of them have been convicted,” Semkiv noted.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, war crimes related to shelling, which result in the death of civilians, are most often recorded. In recent years, the situation has been complicated by the active use of new technologies and various types of weapons.

“Now, of course, these are strikes, for example, by drones, FPV drones, first of all. Everything that is near the front line, in the area where these drones can “reach” — very often these are civilians who fall under such strikes. If at the beginning of the war there were fewer such means and there were few such facts, now their number is increasing every year. Now we are talking about thousands of various kinds of strikes carried out by FPV drones in violation of international humanitarian law. Information about such facts is received literally every day,” he explained.
