People’s deputies propose to ban the Russian language in schools during breaks

In the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered draft law No. 13072, which proposes to amend a number of laws regarding the use of language in the educational process. The document provides for a complete ban on the use of the Russian language in schools, including communication during breaks.
The initiative was submitted by 26 people’s deputies, including Natalia Pipa, Volodymyr Vyatrovych, Sofia Fedina, Nikita Poturaev and Maryana Bezugla. Currently, the draft law has been submitted to the specialized committee for consideration.
The explanatory note states that according to the Law of Ukraine “On Education”, the state language of the educational process is Ukrainian. At the same time, the current legislation does not regulate the language communication of the participants of the educational process outside of formal classes – during breaks, during teacher’s breaks, on the school territory after lessons and in other similar cases.
“This negatively affects both the formation of children’s speech skills, as well as the formation of the state language and the formation of Ukrainian identity, which directly depends on the development and security of the state. Therefore, the issue of introducing a Ukrainian-speaking educational environment today, taking into account the peculiarities of the use of languages of national minorities (communities), is urgent and requires clear legal regulation.”, the document says.
