Poverty level in Ukraine has almost doubled since the start of the war: Hetmantsev
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, the poverty rate in Ukraine has almost doubled, reaching 37%. About this stated Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance Danylo Hetmantsev.
According to him, the deterioration of economic indicators is directly related to military actions.
“All economic processes take place with a negative sign, because they are affected not only by the war itself, but also by general negative expectations.” – explained the deputy.
At the same time, Hetmantsev emphasized that with the advent of peace, the situation may change significantly. Peace, in his opinion, triggers positive social and economic changes:
The People’s Deputy gave an example after the events of 2014, when at first there was a sharp increase in poverty, but in the following years the indicators began to decrease. He emphasized that it is not enough to expect peace – it is necessary to start a discussion on updating the living wage system right now in order to prepare the basis for the post-war restoration of citizens’ well-being.
“There is a so-called peace dividend in every country. This is confirmed by economic history, when peace in itself entails the fact that people begin to get richer and poverty decreases. We can actually see this even from our own statistics, when we had the 14th year and poverty increased. And after the 14th year, it decreased until the 22nd year.” – emphasized Hetmantsev.
