Problems with employment in the front-line regions: every second Ukrainian has difficulties with work

This is due to the lack of suitable vacancies, survey respondents noted.

Sociologists from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) found that a large part of Ukrainians in the front-line and liberated territories face employment problems. This is due to the lack of suitable vacancies, as the survey respondents noted. The results of the study were published KMIS on August 7 on their official website.

Regions with the most difficult situation on the labor market

The survey was conducted from May 31 to June 10, 2024 by telephone interview method (CATI) in eight regions: Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson and Chernihiv. A total of 2,001 interviews were conducted, with about 250 respondents in each oblast.

Residents of the Kherson region most often noted difficulties with employment or opportunities for entrepreneurial activity. In this area, 83.9% of respondents indicated that it is difficult or very difficult to find a new job, and 73.2% noted difficulties in running a business.

The situation in Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions is slightly better. In Dnipropetrovsk region, 57.2% of respondents reported difficulties in finding a new job, in Odesa – 57.7%. However, in these regions, local residents more often complained about cases of violations, such as shadow wages and pressure on entrepreneurs – 25.6% and 23.0%, respectively.

Prospects for business

Ukrainians interviewed by sociologists are very interested in opening their own business. Among potential entrepreneurs, men predominate (56.4%), while women make up 43.6%.

Most potential entrepreneurs would like to start a business in areas that directly interact with consumers and satisfy their daily needs. The most popular directions are retail trade (29.1%) and provision of household services (21.4%).

Also, a significant part of the respondents is interested in the field of agriculture, forestry or fishing (17.7%), production of goods, in particular food, clothing and furniture (14.0%). 10.7% would like to start their own business in the field of art and creativity, 9.7% in the IT sector, and 9.1% in the restaurant business.
