Rubio arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks with representatives of the Russian Federation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of planned talks with Russian officials aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. About this informs Reuters.
Rubio will meet with representatives of the Russian side, along with Trump’s national security adviser Mike Volz and White House special representative for the Middle East Steve Witkoff. It is not yet known which of the Russian officials will take part in the negotiations.
These talks will begin after Donald Trump’s phone conversation with Vladimir Putin last week. According to its results, Trump instructed his high-ranking officials to initiate a dialogue about the war, which he repeatedly promised to end during the election campaign.
The talks, scheduled for February 18, will be one of the first high-level face-to-face meetings between US and Russian officials in recent years and will precede potential talks between the presidents of the two countries. Rubio noted that the coming days and weeks will show whether Vladimir Putin is really ready for a peaceful settlement.
