Russian shelling led to a record number of forest fires in 2024

A record number of fires caused by Russian shelling have been recorded in the forest farms of Ukraine since the beginning of the year. About this reported Yuriy Bolokhovets, General Director of the State Enterprise “Lisa Ukrainy” on his Facebook page.

One of the largest fires occurred in the Chornolis Forestry of Kirovohrad Oblast due to the fall of a rocket. According to Bolokhovets, the powerful explosion caused a fire on horseback, which is particularly dangerous. Fighting the fire was hampered by strong wind and heat, which reached 36 degrees. However, thanks to the efforts of firefighters, the fire was extinguished on the fourth day.

Another case occurred on the territory of the branch of “Sveske Lisve Gospodarstvo” in the Sumy region, where the fire was caused by the impact of a guided aerial bomb. Due to hostilities in the border areas, it was difficult to monitor the progress of the fire with the help of video surveillance due to heavy smoke. However, six forest guards were able to control the fire on an area of ​​27.8 hectares in just two hours.

In the Kharkiv region, shelling caused a fire in the Skrypaivsky reserve, the fire spread to the neighboring forest fund in the Zadonetsky forestry. The fire on an area of ​​32 hectares was successfully contained.

During the past week, more than 100 fires were recorded in the state forestry farms of the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson regions on an area of ​​483.9 hectares. In total, 92 fires with an area of ​​225 hectares were extinguished during the week.

Despite the critical situation in the front-line territories, the situation remains stable in the rear areas, such as the Volyn, Rivne, and Ternopil regions. No forest fires have been recorded in these regions since the beginning of the year.
